Gray stone houses with slate roofs lay clustered along the narrow streets of town, clinging to a hillside above a little stream spanned by a low wooden bridge. The muddy streets were empty, and so was the sloping green, except for one man sweeping the steps of the town's only hall. Half a dozen arches, woven with such few flowers stood in a circle in the middle of the grass. The aromas of sweet and spiced cakes clung about the green, mixed in with evening meals cooking. |
